The job
This is an exciting time for WSC, with a major new project on the horizon, and we are looking to expand our team. Working from our central London office, the job is called Editorial Assistant but encompasses a wide range of tasks covering two major areas – running the magazine’s subscription operation and supporting the editorial staff.
Subscriptions and merchandise
We currently have around 10,000 subscribers in the UK and abroad, which represents a large and loyal proportion of our readership. The successful applicant will be looking after our new and existing subscribers: processing their orders, ensuring that the magazine reaches them each month and dealing with any problems that occur.
In addition we sell our own books and T-shirts through the magazine and website, and your job is to deal with this operation from start to finish, from processing orders to maintaining stock levels and dispatching the goods. Each week you will need to process payments and organise the banking.
Editorial
Alongside the publishing side of the business you will also support the editorial staff in a variety of tasks, including producing the Weekly Howl email, helping to develop the magazine’s various social media accounts and conducting picture research.
The future
You will get a chance to gain experience working across all aspects of the business. As you become more proficient at the various tasks an increasing amount of your time will be freed up, meaning you can start dedicating more attention to the editorial side of the job and take on roles such as maintaining the website as well as writing and sub-editing articles for both online and print. As mentioned earlier, we are working on a new project which, if successful, will open up a wide range of opportunities for you.
The person
The job would suit a recent graduate looking to make their first steps in a publishing career. To succeed you will need to be literate, numerate, efficient, have the necessary sense of humour to deal with us and our readers and, most importantly, be able to work hard without constant supervision. You will need a blend of administrative competence, customer service experience and editorial ambitions. You will have an enthusiasm for and strong knowledge of all levels of football, an understanding of the modern media landscape, be brimming with ideas and familiar with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. You will also need to be flexible – you may be required occasionally to work weekends or bank holidays.
To apply
Email your CV, a letter detailing why you are the right candidate and three feature ideas for the magazine to job@wsc.co.uk.
