Gillingham will be spending the season without their leading scorer Marlon King, after the striker’s appeal against a conviction for handling stolen goods, namely a BMW convertible, was rejected in July. King’s sentence of 18 months, initially handed down at the Inner London Crown Court on May 10, will now begin from the date of the appeal.

When he saw Jan Louwers bending over to adjust the ball on the penalty spot, Lieuwe Steiger checked his position on the goalline once more by looking at one of the posts. Watched by a capacity crowd (and then some), the PSV keeper had been beaten by local rivals EVV once that afternoon. Now the score stood at 1-1. The losers of this local derby could be out of the championship play-offs for 1955, the first year of Dutch professional football. When Steiger looked up again to prepare for the penalty, he saw Louwers grinning sheepishly. There was a space on the penalty spot where the ball should have been. The Eindhoven striker had already taken the kick, hoping he could surprise the keeper. So he did, almost hitting a photographer with his miscue.
After a two year stint in the top flight, Ipswich fans have felt the highs and the ultimate lows of what the Premiership has to offer. Is a managerial change is needed to secure an instant return next season?

This season promised so much for Ipswich Town, starting with European football earned through the previous year’s top five finish. The shocking relegation that followed has been blamed on, variously, bad luck, injuries, too many foreign players and rumours of player unrest.

Dear WSC
While Ian Kelp (Letters, WSC 183) makes some valid points about the bizarre soft spot banks have for football clubs in allowing them to trade on nought but promises year after year, I fear that he is too puritanical in his approach to business planning. Page one of the Company Treasurer’s Handbook tells us about cashflow planning and a seemingly valid contract promising revenue at fixed future times is a reasonable thing to make plans on, or, if necessary, borrow against. No business waits until the money is in the bank account before planning how to spend it, or indeed actually spending it. Would Marks and Spencer wait until it had a queue of unsatisfied customers waving bunches of tenners in the branch until it ordered a batch of knickers from its suppliers? Where the clubs have probably been naive is in what appears to be a less than watertight contract. If it is true that Carlton and Granada can walk away without liability for their little joint venture, the clubs should be looking at the quality of their legal advice. The fact that the share prices of both Carlton and Granada rose once the situation became public is a pretty depressing sign of what the City thinks of that contract.
