Maine Road was Manchester City’s home from 1923 to 2003. Until recently it still held the English club record for the highest home attendance, when 84,569 turned up to watch City play Stoke in the FA Cup sixth round in March 1934. That figure was surpassed when 85,512 watched Tottenham play Bayer Leverkusen at Wembley in the Champions League in November 2016. Maine Road was also the location for Manchester United’s highest “home” attendance – 83,260 against Arsenal in January 1948 – which was set when Old Trafford was being rebuilt following its bombing during the Second World War.
By the time of its closure Maine Road held just 35,150 and Manchester City moved to the City of Manchester Stadium, built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
